While timelines track history through milestones and figures, our true identity is shaped by the daily rhythms of the estate and the generations of workers who care for the land.
Sundarpur is more than just an agricultural operation—it is a self-sustaining ecosystem where human dedication balances naturally with the intense weather cycles of Upper Assam. Our paths run along the edge of the active Brahmaputra river plain, creating a unique agricultural microclimate where forest lines meet cultivated rows.
The defining character of our leaf stems from careful, daily management. Hand-plucking tea leaves is an art passed down across generations within our community families. It requires a sharp, natural instinct to select the exact moment of peak cell moisture before the afternoon heat sets in.
By choice, we maintain complete single-estate custody over our crops. We don't buy external leaves from outside brokers just to increase volume. This careful boundary ensures that every single leaf sorted on our clean factory floors is born directly from our own soil, reflecting the genuine, unblended story of Sundarpur.
A man who wore many capes — planter, Freedom Fighter, Parliamentarian — P.C. Borooah carved Sundarpur out of jungle and built a thriving estate from the ground up. Inspite of having to travel large distances by foot, bicycle or by bullock cart, his determination and persistence slowly bore fruit and the young plantation began to flourish.
"Travelling by foot, bicycle and bullock cart — his determination slowly bore fruit."
As one of the first Indians trained in tea tasting by A.W. Figgis — one of the leading tea broking houses of the era — Jayanta Kumar Borooah harboured a dream. His single-handed toil and devotion established Sundarpur at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre and expanded the estate to include Baruakhat and Ratanpur.
"To make Sundarpur a producer of high quality Assam Tea, and to let the consumers Taste the Difference."
The third generation brings Sundarpur into a new era — Trustea certified, globally distributed, and led by MD Mrs. Lakhimi Borooah, Directors Mrs. Jahnabhi Phookan and Mrs. Atreyee Borooah Thekedath. Production is headed by Mr. Arun Thekedath. Today, the estate produces 1.8 million kilograms of premium Assam tea annually. The same red soil. The same commitment to craft.
"Honouring every step that came before, while walking boldly into what comes next."
From bush to cup, every step meets the highest standard — not because it must, but because it's the only way we know.
Fair wages, safe environments, and genuine care for every worker and family on the estate — no exceptions, no asterisks.
A century of story doesn't just inform what we do — it demands we do it well. The past is not a museum; it's a compass.
Assam tea that travels. From auction at Guwahati to blending houses worldwide — Sundarpur is Assam's ambassador in every cup.
